What you should know about bareboat yacht charters

January 16 2013 | 14 comments

Did you ever ask yourself questions like "what might be the total number of bareboat charter yachts" or "does Spain or Italy receive more charter bookings"? Well, we did ask ourselves those questions and tried to find some answers by analyzing our data resources that we gained through our YachtBooker Reservation System and YachtSys during the last years. In order not to let the results appear too dry, our designer Miruna dedicated quite some days to vizualize the pure information as infograhic in an hopefully enjoyable format.

The accuracy of the displayed figures is influenced by the unsharp edges symptomatic for the yacht charter industry and might vary accordingly. We will be grateful for your critics and hope that you will share your own figures to help making the following versions of the Bareboat Yacht Charter Infographic even more reliable.

Hi Felix,
The difference between preferred country versus most visited country first strikes as odd but can be explained by accesibility; Greece is simply less easy to travel to, whereas Croatia can be reached by car from most countries.

Nice research!

While sampling and analyzing the data from the yacht charter market for preparing the infographic we discovered quite some interesting topics. Some issues we were already expecting from our personal experience, like the increase in the average charter boat lenght over the last decades. Also the fact that Bavaria Yachts is still the dominant charter boat brand was quite obvious. However we were not really aware that by customer votes Greece is elected as the favourite charter destination while Croatia still receives more bookings. It could have been expected that clients will book the destination they name their favourite.

Remarkable is that between the youngest bareboat charter crew members and the oldest fits a whole generation (20 years). So it seems that bareboat charter is a leisure activity that brings generations together :-)

The year of built of charter yachts reveal that the financial crisis left its scars. The percentage of yachts with age in between 3 - 4 years is definitely underrepresented in the graphic "How old are charter yachts?".

Most attention probably will receive the graphic "How many charter yachts operate worldwide?" Before we were roughly guessing a total number of bareboats in between 10.000 and 15.000. After finishing our evaluation that is not only based on own figures but on other sources, we even dared to plot the numbers per country. We found out that most external sources seem to overestimate the number of operating charter yachts in Greece. Greece is definitely the second biggest bareboat charter market in the world but we could only with good will count more than 1700 bareboat yachts that receive more than 3 - 5 charter weeks per year. Well, the plotted numbers can never have sharp edges because it depends very much from the point of view what you consider to be an "operative" charter yacht. But counting only the charter licenses per country will not bring us closer to the real figures. At the end we determined the worldwide number of operative bareboat charter yachts around 11.000.

We hope that this infographic will inspire your own views about the bareboat charter market. We will continue publishing further even more specific infographics focusing next on the leading charter destinations. We would appreciate if you could contribute your own figures or critics in the comment section below to support our efforts making those information even more accurate.
